PANJIM, JUNE 20
Two Muslim communities Muzavar and Nadaf have requested the State Government to include them in Other Backward Class (OBC).
The two communities enjoy OBC status in Maharashtra and some other States and hence they have written to Goa State Commission for Backward Classes (GSCBC), informed our sources at the Commission. However, the Commission has not received a detailed petition from two communities.
Currently, a total of 19 communities are listed as OBCs. This week, two communities, Christian Renders (toddy tappers) and Komarpanth were included in the list of OBCs.
Toddy tappers are largely based in Salcete, Quepem, Tiswadi, Canacona, Sanguem, Mormugao and Ponda and their population is expected to be around 29,800.
People from Komarpant community found mainly in Canacona, does not have any fixed profession. They mostly work as manual labour, said the source and their population is about 0.25 per cent that is 3500. Some people of this community work as tailors, cooks et al.
