973 females for every 1,000 males in Goa

PANJIM: Though the sex ratio of the State is higher than the national average, there has been drastic decline in the sex ratio after Liberation of Goa in 1961. Though Goa is touted as being among the more progressive states, it stands at the 10th position in the country, in terms of sex ratio, with 973 females for every 1,000 males.

The Economic Survey 2014-15 tabled in House on Tuesday, shows that the sex ratio as very high among the scheduled tribes (1,046) and Scheduled castes (1,015), and is much above the general population average.

The report states that the sex ratio fell from 980 to 960 females per 1000 males between 1971 and 2011.

“The sex ratio of the State stands at 973 females per 1000 males, which is much higher than the national average of 940. Goa ranks at 10th position in the country in respect of sex ratio. This suggests that the State has a healthy sex ratio,” the survey reads, adding that Kerala tops the list with a sex ratio of 1,084.

As per the survey, State had a high sex ratio during the pre-Liberation era, which stood between 1,091 females per 1,000 males in 1900 to 1,066 females per 1,000 males in 1960. However, after the 1971 Census, the sex ratio began to decline gradually against women.

“The sex ratio which stood at 981 females per 1,000 males in 1971 declined to 975 in 1981 and further to 960 in 2001,” the report stated.

As per the statistics, South Goa has healthy sex ratio - 986 females per thousand males, while in North the 

ratio is 963.
