Bicholim fruit stall goes up in flames

BICHOLIM: A fruit stall at Vathadev Bicholim was gutted in fire on Sunday night, while fire fighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to a nearby petrol pump.

The incident occurred at about 10.30 pm when strong winds and heavy rains brought down electricity wires on the stall, which is close to the petrol pump opposite Bicholim Primary Health Centre. 

The fire personnel immediately swung into action and doused the fire.

Sarvan-Karapur Deputy Sarpanch Dheeraj Sawant claimed that the fruit stall was illegal and had been erected at the entrance of the petrol pump. Speaking to Herald, Sawant said all the stalls had been served notices. “The panchayat had already served a notice to this stall, which was erected very close to the petrol pump and was totally illegal. Surprisingly, the stall was also given electricity connection by the department,” Sawant said.
