CALANGUITE, MAY 28
Sneha G Salgaonkar was on Friday elected unopposed deputy sarpanch of Calangute Panchayat.
It may be recalled that the post had fallen vacant after Ana Marie D’Souza stepped down as per the understanding among the ruling group. The ruling group led by former Calangute sarpanch Joseph Sequeira was present in full strength and anxiously waited for Presiding Officer S V Naik to make the declaration.
Naik finally declared Salgaonkar elected unopposed as deputy sarpanch of Calangute Panchayat at the elections held in the panchayat premises.
Calangute Sarpanch Laxman Parab Palyekar, former Calangute sarpanch Joseph Sequeira, Panchas Alex Fernandes, Subhash Salgaonkar and former deputy sarpanch Ana Marie D’Souza congratulated Salgaonkar.
Surprisingly, other panchayat members failed to take part in the election process to elect the new deputy sarpanch.
Speaking to Herald, former Calangute sarpanch Joseph Sequeira said: “Absence of opposition members for the election goes to prove that they have accepted the defeat.”
Presiding Officer S V Naik oversaw the election process, which began at 10.30 am, concluded at 12 noon. Panchayat Secretary Subodh Prabhu assisted the presiding officer in the election process.
A large number of supporters of the ruling group later called on the Deputy Sarpanch Sneha G Salgaonkar to wish her well in her future endeavours.
