Cross damaged in Ponda
PONDA: A cross installed in a private property was damaged by miscreants in Ponda on Saturday morning. According to reports, Aurelio Peres from Santa Cruz in Ponda informed Ponda police that the cross installed in the compound of his house had been damaged by unknown persons in the wee hours of Saturday. He suspects that this may have been done by miscreants to try and stoke communal tension in the area. A neighbour pointed that miscreants have been damaging crosses in private properties and by the roadsides since the past two years in Dag-Ponda and Dhavali-Ponda. Locals have appealed to the police to patrol the areas in Ponda to prevent such incidents. Ponda PSI Gokulda Malik is investigating the case.
Five injured in mishap at Assolda
QUEPEM: Five youth were injured after they were alleged to have been involved in rash driving near the Assolda panchayat building at Xink-Xelvona on Saturday. According to Quepem police, the incident took place as Santosh Naik (20) from Curchorem, Shoib Kadari (18) and a minor boy from Pontemol-Curchorem, Siddesh Sainath Naik (25) and Abijit Viswas Fadte (24) from Tisk-Usgao were travelling on three two-wheelers from Curchorem towards Margao via Chandor. On reaching a straight road near the Assolda village panchayat office, the three motorcycles collided with each other and all the riders fell off and were injured. Police later moved the injured youth to the Curchorem PHC, from where Fadte was discharged after first aid. The rest were moved to the Hospicio Hospital at Margao for further treatment.
Two commit suicide at Ponda
PONDA: Two persons ended their lives in separate incidents at Ponda. According to Ponda police, a Bihar native, Justin (30), who was employed at a Farm in Nageshi-Bandora committed suicide in his rented premises. Police said Justin had arrived in Goa two days ago. In the second incident, Mallappa Basappa Bijur (19), a native of Bijapur, Karnataka, but residing at Zigdimal-Curti, committed suicide in the toilet of an abandoned house at Haveli-Curti. Police said he was working as newspaper boy at the Ponda bus stand.
Mother-son duo injured in mishap
CURCHOREM: A woman and her son were injured in a road accident near railway gate at Xelvona-Curchorem. According to Curchorem police, Sangita Dessai (39) was proceeding with her son Aryan (11) from Curchorem to Xelvona on a two-wheeler (GA-09-J-9826). On reaching a sharp turn on the Xelvona slope near the railway gate, they were struck by an oncoming two-wheeler (GA-05-C-9316). Curchorem police moved the injured persons to Curchorem PHC, from where they were referred to Hospicio in Margao for further medical treatment.
Anthony heads Vasco ST panel
PANJIM: The general body meeting of Mormugao Scheduled Tribes Association elected Anthony Miranda as its President for 2015-2017. Hilario Figueiredo, Sarpanch of Cortalim-Quelossim was the presiding officer. Anthony is a former sarpanch and presently holds numerous positions in various organizations. He succeeds Adv Caitan Monteiro whose term expired in November 2014. The other office bearers are Joaquim D’Souza, Jose Mario Furtado, Sandeep Bandodkar, Vincent Pereira (vice-president), Adv Avelina D’Sa e Pereira (general secretary), Remedios Dourado, Roque D’Silva (asst secretary), Paulo Souza (treasurer), Mariano Moura, Santana D’Sa (asst treasurers), Filipe D’Souza (org secretary).
NGO opens office in Arpora
CALANGUTE: The office of the NGO ‘Straight from Heart’ was inaugurated at Arpora, with an aim to reach out to the needy and underprivileged. Addressing a gathering after inaugurating the office, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo highlighted the importance of NGOs in reaching out to the needy and helping the underprivileged. Lobo also stressed on the role that NGOs could play in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. ‘Straight From Heart’ President Uttam Kumar outlined the NGO’s commitment to the underprivileged and elaborated on the NGO’s mission: One Life, One World, One Change.
