1976: Joins Congress
1977: President of the Congress in Goa. Party wins 10 seats for the first time
1978: When Congress splits, stays with Congress (U)
1980: Congress (U) wins a majority in Goa. As Babu Naik and he vie for the chief minister’s post, Pratapsingh Rane emerges as a consensus candidate. Stays out of the cabinet
1981: Joins the government
1983: Splits from the Congress and forms the Goa Congress
1984: Loses election from Calangute constituency as Goa Congress candidate
1988: Rejoins Congress
1989: Wins from Saligao on a Congress ticket
1993: Becomes Chief Minister
1994: Is ousted but returns as Chief Minister in a week; Wins from Saligao
1995: Is made deputy Chief Minister
1997: Breaks away from the Congress and forms the Goa Rajiv Congress
