Convention for youth at Panjim
PANJIM: Gomantak Maratha Samaj is organizing a youth empowerment convention titled, ‘Road to Success’ at Gomantak Maratha Samaj hall, Panjim on October 26, from 10 am onwards. Ex-chief minister Shashikala Kakodkar will be the chief guest, while Additional Collector (North) Swapnil Naik and Guna S Naik, President of the Samaj will be the guests of honour. This convention is especially for the youth to prepare the next generation of Samaj leaders. This youth empowerment convention is the first such event. Speakers at the convention include Prof Prabhakar Timble, Vivek Patki and Prof S L Sardessai.
Dinesh Patel to deliver talk in Japan
MARGAO: Author and poet Dinesh Patel has been invited to deliver a talk at the 8th Japan Writers Conference to be held on October 25 and 26, at Iwate National University, Morioka, Iwate prefecture. The Goan writer will deliver a 50-minute presentation on ‘Generous with Genres - Why writers seek various genres.’ Dinesh has written seven books, each in different genres, including historical fiction, suspense thriller, poetry, children’s stories, how-to/motivational, self-help and a guide. Dinesh will also release his eighth book - Goan Tales 2 Mudskipper’s Dream and Other Stories during the two-day festival. 
Debate contest for students 
PANJIM: Goa Branch of WIRC of ICAI along with WICASA Goa conducted a school-level debate competition on September 20 for students of XI and XII at EDC Hall, Panjim, in which 17 schools participated. WICASA Chairman, Kiran Kharangate welcomed while Goa Branch Chairman, Naveen G Daivajna and past chairman, Anup R S Borkar also spoke. Shekhar Marathe was the judge and moderator. Inica Fernandes of Our Lady of the Rosary HSS, Dona Paula was adjudged the winner. 
Screening of Blessed Joseph Vaz film 
PANJIM: The Konkani Film ‘Panvlam’ (with English sub-titles) based on the life of Blessed Joseph Vaz, scripted and directed by Agnelo Fernandes, will be screened on October 18 and 19, at Navelim near market and near Sinquetim chapel and on October 26, at Tilamol Church at 7 pm.  
Bambolim gram sabha on October 26
PANJIM: The gram sabha of Curca-Bambolim-Talaulim will be convened on October 26, at 10.30 am, in the premises of Our Lady of Fatima Rosary Chapel, Gaonkar Wado, Curca, Tiswadi. 
Sarzora resident knocked down by train
MARGAO: Bethu Reddy, a 25-year-old resident of Sarzora, died on the spot after he was accidentally hit by a running train at Sazora. According to information the incident occurred at 4 pm on October 14, when the deceased was crossing the railway track. A case of unnatural death has been registered by the Konkan Railway police.
Trespass in mining area at Sanguem
SANGUEM: Some persons entered a mining lease property at Patiem-Sanguem and dug trenches, blocking access to the internal mining lease area. According to Sanguem police, Aleixo Manuel C P Da Costa, proprietor of Manual Da Costa Mine, Margao, complained that some persons trespassed into the mining lease property at Patiem-Sanguem and dug trenches by using machinery, thereby blocking access to the internal mining lease area. 
Premises looted at Cortalim 
VASCO: LCD TV, three mobile phones and cash, all worth Rs 33,100 were stolen from a rented room at Thana-Cortalim. According to Verna police, Saiprasad Deshpande of Sawantwadi-Sindhudurg complained that some person stole three mobile phones, cash of Rs 400 and LCD TV, all worth Rs 33,100 from his rented room near Datta Mandir, Thana-Cortalim. Police is investigating the case.
Matanhy Saldanha Memorial lecture 
PANJIM: The Matanhy Saldanha Memorial Foundation set up in memory of the former Environment and Tourism Minister, is conducting its first Matanhy Saldanha Memorial lecture to be delivered by noted environmental scientist and Director-General of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), Dr Rajendra Kumar Pachauri on October 18, at Dinanath Mangeshkar Auditorium, Kala Academy, Panjim. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar will be the chief guest. The event starts at 5 pm and a cultural programme and release of the book ‘To Live Is To Love: The Life and Legacy of Matanhy Saldanha,’ will follow. The book is authored by Diana Pinto and chronicles the life and struggles of the peoples’ leader. The book in aid of the foundation will be available for sale at the venue. The keynote address will be followed by a panel discussion, which will be moderated by Pramod Acharya. 
Art exhibition at Kala Academy
PANJIM: The 40th State Art exhibition (Artist category) organized by Kala Academy will be held from November 6 to 10, at the Art Gallery, Kala Academy complex, Panjim. Entry forms will be available at programme and development section of Kala Academy from October 21. The entries along with the exhibits will be accepted on October 30 and 31, between 10 am to 4 pm.
