Now, students with 75% marks eligible for IIT admissions

NEW DELHI: Those scoring 75 per cent marks in Class XII will also be eligible for admissions in the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) if they score well in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).

The amended norm as recommended by the IIT Council early this month and approved by the government relaxes the rule that allowed the entry of only top 20 percentile of Class XII alone to IITs. This will pave way for more students to participate in the JEE counselling from the next year.

The rule was changed after the realisation that 200 students with top scores could not make it to the premier institutions because they did not figure among the top 20 in the examination conducted by their particular boards.

Those securing 70 per cent marks in their Class XII examination will also qualify for counselling and admission if they fall in the category of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and disable categories.

The new criteria are as follows: Candidates must have taken at least five subjects in class 12th qualifying examination in order to be eligible for writing JEE (Main) - 2015. The candidates who have taken four subjects are not permitted to write JEE (Main).

Students who appeared for IIT JEE 2013 or earlier are NOT eligible for JEE Advanced 2015 test. A maximum of two attempts are allowed in two consecutive years.

Candidates who wish to write JEE (Advanced)-2015 must write the Paper-1 of JEE (Main)-2015 in the month of April, 2015.

Only top 1, 50,000 candidates (including all categories) qualified in Paper-1 of JEE (Main) - 2014 will be eligible to appear for JEE (Advanced)-2015.

Candidates in the General/Other Backward Class/Non Creamy Layer category have to secure 75% marks in class 12th; students under the SC/ST/disabled category have to secure 70% marks in class 12th to participate in counselling as well as to take admission in the IITs.

Candidates who passed Class 12th/Qualifying examination in 2012 or before as well as those who will appear in such examination in 2016 or later are not eligible to appear in JEE (Main)-2015. Candidates who appeared in class 12th/equivalent qualifying Examinations in 2012, did not pass in 2012, but passed in 2013 are also not eligible to appear in JEE (Main) 2015.
