PANJIM: Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai on Wednesday said the government must conduct audit of private security agencies as bouncers are being used to evict people from houses.

Speaking during discussion on demands for grants for home, Public Works Department (PWD) and Civil Defence, he said, “A new system of bouncers have come into being. It’s a new breed. Bodybuilders put on Safari (suits) and roam as bouncers. Some are even seen in ministers’ cabinet. Some roam like MLAs.”

“If bouncers start doing evictions, providing security to someone or beating up someone, then it will mean that government is institutionalising goondaraj,” Sardesai said.

This was a possible reference to the kidnapping and eviction case in Anjuna, where bouncers were sent along with JCBs to demolish the home of an existing tenant. Pooja Sharma, a wife of a diplomat, is an accused in that case who got bail and made a solitary appearance before the Crime Branch.

He said, “Chief Minister should tell us who are these bouncers and when was the audit of private security agencies done.”

Sardesai said the police department, right from Canacona to Pernem, needs a detox as crimes against women have increased and conviction rate is low.

“The CM says that reporting has increased but I say that there is a need to focus on conviction rates. Crime has gone up or reporting has increased. This is not important. Let us look at the conviction rate. Cybercrimes also are on the rise,” he said.

Sardesai said the government may deny, but the fact is that drugs are being found in the hinterlands and there is a need to protect the future generation from this menace.
