PANJIM: The Public Interest Litigation (PIL), seeking removal of the waste dump at Sonsoddo in Margao, is being sought to be amended to remove some technical problems in the petition.
The PIL was filed by Goa Foundation and Citizens for Sonsodo which will come up for hearing before the High Court of Bombay at Goa by September end.
The petitioners had prayed for a stay from the High Court on the dumping of fresh waste at the old garbage site. However, due to technical issues an amended petition will be submitted. “There were some technical problems with the petition; hence, we will submit an amended petition within one week. We have sought that High Court grants interim stay on the dumping of fresh waste at Sonsodo garbage dumping site,” petitioner Claude Alvares said.
The PIL is being heard by a new bench after Justice Nutan Sardessai recused herself from hearing the matter, last month. Thereafter, the matter was placed before the new Division Bench of Justices Mahesh Sonak and Prithviraj Chavan.
The petitioners have sought permanent removal of the Sonsodo garbage waste dump, claiming it poses grave threat to the health and the environment of citizens in the vicinity.
