Rainfall continues to play  hide-and-seek in Goa

PANJIM: The rains continued to play hide and seek this month as well, in spite of the prediction of a good rainfall by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Altinho.

In the beginning of the week, the weather predicted a revival of rainfall activity from September 3 or 4, 2023.

But as per the data, North Goa district witnessed 89 per cent departure of rainfall while South Goa district witnessed 86 per cent during a period between August 31 and September 6, 2023. If the rainfall is between minus 60 per cent to plus 59 per cent, then it is considered to be large deficient.

However, as far as seasonal rainfall was concerned, it remained near normal.

As per the IMD, Goa received a rainfall of 111.24 inches against the normal rainfall of 111.04 inches during a period of June 1, 2023 to September 6, 2023.

According to IMD data, North Goa received 115.4 inches of rainfall against normal rainfall of 115.5 inches between June 1, 2023, and September 10, 2023, registering a departure of -0.1 per cent.

South Goa recorded 111.64 inches of rainfall as against 110.3 inches of rainfall during the period of June 1, 2033, to September 10, 2023, registering a departure of 1.2 per cent.

The average rainfall for the period for the state was 113.4 inches as against 112.7 inches, registering a departure of 6 per cent.

On September 10, North Goa received 0.2 inches of rainfall as against 0.3 inches, a departure of minus 29.3 per cent while South Goa recorded 3.5 mm of rainfall as against 9.07 mm - a departure of minus 61.0 per cent.

However, speaking to O Heraldo, K S Hosalikar, Scientist and Head Pune, IMD, said, “We are expecting that the rainfall activity to continue over Konkan area, which includes Goa, for the next 10-12 days. There is a possibility of further revival of rainfall activity somewhere around September 14 or 15. There could be good rainfall over central India which includes the Konkan region as week. Things are looking improved. Prolonged break in August created a big deficit.”
