Reap benefits of Sagarmala project, GMOA tells maritime community

MARGAO: Newly formed Goa Maritime Officers Association (GMOA) is of the opinion that under the Sagarmala project, the Ministry of Shipping has been focusing on improving the coastal shipping and inland waterways transport which is an environment friendly mode of transport. 

On Thursday, GMOA was launched at Margao, wherein the association has appealed to the maritime community in Goa to take the initiative and seize this moment of Sagarmala project as an opportunity for their own advantage. 

Addressing the press conference along with Larsen D’Sa, Nixon Gomes and Bhaskar Rivankar, Jacint Da Silva, President of GMOA informed that they will be meeting the Chief Minister of Goa, besides several other concerned authorities in order to create awareness among the children at school level pertaining to the profession of maritime officers. 

Looking at the future, GMOA has claimed that in Goa they have highly experienced and trained maritime officers, besides experts in the field who can help the government with regard to the Sagarmala project. 

“Under the Sagarmala project inland jetties will be revived, besides cruise terminals. There will be coastal shipping wherein the government will be in need of expert and training maritime officers. And hence, those maritime officers in Goa can surely take the advantage of the project,” said Da Silva. 

He further informed that in Goa, they have the master mariner group and the engineers group, both consisting of numerous active members who have been actively engaged in their respective fields. With the inception of the GMOA, driven by motto to guide, support and excel. 

“Our primary aim is to bridge this gap and bring together all maritime officers, to promote the development of Maritime and allied industry and to further enhance the knowledge without any political, religious, caste creed discrimination bias,” he explained. 

As informed by the President, GMOA wants to set a small and achievable target of creating awareness of the marine officers profession at the secondary school level. More students should recognize it as a career option and aspire to become captains and chief engineers in the future.
