PANJIM: With the rise in road accidents in the state, the death toll has risen at an alarming rate. Seven deaths were recorded in 72 hours this weekend. In this edition of Street Voices,  Herald TV spoke to various people on whether all driving licenses should issued to persons between age 18-25 be suspended pending retesting in proper a manner.

Licences are very much a part of daily life. We need to have rules and regulations which are governed by authorities. But unfortunately, the driver training which is being given by the training schools, one is not taught properly, how to drive carefully and avoid accidents in the first year of driving. I urge the RTO and the Traffic Police to look into the matter at their level. The RTO officials who are issuing licences should also be judicious in issuing licences. There are a number of accidents on Goan road, especially where youngsters driving electric vehicles are involved. Many of these electric vehicles do not require licences.

It is not that all youngsters are not driving properly, some drive safely. But many youngsters drive fast and use mobile phones while driving, which is dangerous. Nobody follows the traffic rules in Goa. Those who follow rules maybe knocked down by hitting them from behind and sometimes even lives are lost. In particular, the tourists have no idea which side to drive, which side to overtake, where to cross. This is the main reason why accidents take place and others suffer. But I feel that use of mobile phones while driving is the main cause of accidents in Goa.

Suspending licences will not solve the problem since most of the youngsters who drive do not have licences at all. RTO should be very strict in issuing licences and ensure that they conduct the test properly.  Even if they possess a licence, the youngsters do not know how to drive the vehicle properly. They drive recklessly, overtaking from any side, do not see at what speed they are driving, and do not care for senior citizens crossing the road. Adults are also involved in accidents, but the main reason for accidents is bad roads and potholes. When one is driving at a speed, one cannot see the potholes and when one brakes, it leads to self-accidents.
