PANJIM: After O Heraldo highlighted the shoddy work executed under the Smart City Mission for the construction of the 50-metre cement concrete paver block stretch between Hindu Pharmacy and Ritz Café near Garcia de Orta (municipal garden) in the city, the Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited (IPSCDL) appointed contractor has replaced the pavers that had developed cracks.

North Goa Collector Mamu Hage, who is also the Chief Executing Officer (CEO) of IPSCDL, had inspected the site and had reportedly directed the contractor to replace the pavers and carry out minor repair works.

However, the ramp constructed on the adjoining footpath continues to be without a railing and is unsafe for pedestrians, particularly for Persons with Disabilities. The drains constructed along the stretch are also full of filth and littered with waste including plastic bottles.

This stretch has been constructed by IPSCDL appointed contractor as part of the beautification and pedestrianisation of Cafe Bhonsle Square.

A senior official of the IPSCDL said that the project is incomplete and work on the said stretch will restart post monsoon.

“The area was being developed as a pedestrian zone after discussions with the CCP. Hence, paver blocks were laid instead of constructing a concrete road on the said stretch. However, the CCP has now asked IPSCDL to drop the plan and develop the stretch as a full-fledged road on which even heavy vehicles could ply,” the official said.
