PANJIM: The Chief Minister has urged the people to take public transport in order to avoid accidents.  The CM's suggestion is good, some would say, but provided there is enough public transport for the people to commute. In this edition of Street Voices, Herald TV spoke to persons whether Goa has an efficient public transport, since the Chief Minister had asked people to take public transport.

It is necessary that we have more buses, so that there is convenience for people –all types of people whether they are children, middle aged, senior citizens, disabled, have access from their residence to wherever they have to go. Be it the passengers, be it the driver, conductor. More than that, everyone should be peaceful. We want peace in Goa and communal harmony.

It should be a frequent transport, so that there is no congestion in the buses, there is a place for everyone to travel comfortably and most important is the safety.

There is a lot of public transport and many people take public transport because it is convenient and they don’t have to worry about parking, especially in urban areas. The problem with public transport is that whether it is privately owned or publicly owned buses is that they stop anywhere because they want passengers. They stop abruptly and this can cause accidents. We should educate them where to stop. They need to know how to stop safely.

However buses don’t ply on all routes and secondly, they don’t stop where you want to get down. Therefore people use their own vehicles, especially in the rural areas.

There needs to be a survey done of public transport as to what is happening. Many people have permits to run the buses, but they are not plying. Especially in rural areas, there are no adequate buses, so people are forced to buy two wheelers. The chief minister made a statement on October 12, that people should use public transport.

I would tell the chief minister to come and see what is actually happening on the ground. It is very easy to say use public transport. But there has to be public transport for us to use. If there is no public transport, how are people going to use it?
