PONDA: With the five-year period of financial assistance being given by the State government to the sugarcane farmers after closure of the Sanjivani sugar factory, Dharbandora, in South Goa, coming to an end this month, the farmers are worried about their future and have appealed to the government to continue with the scheme till the factory is restarted.
It may be recalled that at the time of the factory’s closure in 2019-20, the government had assured farmers of compensation till five years for their standing crop. However, with the period of the scheme ending soon this month, the farmers are uncertain about their future. The hopes of reviving the sugarcane farming have been shattered.
Sugarcane Farmers Association President, Rajendra Desai said the government should not betray them on the promises given to them.
“Since last five years the government has been promising us that the factory would be restarted soon. But in all these years, no effort was made to restart the factory. The government should clearly tell us about the future of the Sanjivani factory. Until the operations resume, the financial assistance must continue,” Desai said.
