Sugar factory workers’ rally in city today

PONDA: Around 270 workers of Sanjeevani sugar factory at Dharbandora will stage a protest rally in Panjim on Tuesday to protest against the State government’s failure to implement the Maharashtra Sugar Wage Board pay scale since 2009. The workers will gather at the Panjim bus stand and will later proceed in the city. “The wage board has been approved by the State government in 2009, but it has not paid salaries according to the Wage Board and hence, we are resorting to a strike,” said Sanjeevani Workers’ Union Secretary Dinkar Sadekar. “Besides, there are 60 workers who are yet to be confirmed by the government and there are other pending demands,” he added.

Maharashtra native falls in Dudhsagar 

PONDA: A man from Maharashtra has been missing after he fell into the Dudhsagar waterfall. According to reports, a group of 13 persons had gone for a picnic at Dudhasagar waterfall, when one person, Shabbir Sayyed, who was seated on a rock, slipped and fell in the Dudhsagar waterfall. Search operations are in progress and a case has been registered at the Collem police station.

Three held for theft at Zuari Nagar

VASCO: Verna police on Monday arrested three persons, including a minor, in connection with a burglary at Zuari Nagar. According to Verna police, Satya Prakash Tiwari on Sunday had lodged a complaint regarding a burglary in his flat at Zuari Nagar.

He told police that he had heard some noise in his flat and on inspecting the premises, found two bags of clothes, two mobiles and his wallet with ATM cards and cash of Rs 1500 missing. Acting on the complaint, police visited the building which was fitted with CCTV cameras and after going through the footage, identified the three persons and arrested them. The police identified two accused as Mohamad Shamid Sheik (33), Salil Shaik (20) and a 16-year-old boy, all from Kharidawada-Vasco, who are employed as fishermen. While Mohamad and Salil were arrested under Section 380 of IPC, the minor boy was sent to Apna Ghar at Merces. PSI Anand Shirodkar of Verna Police is investigating.

Rangoli contest in Tiswadi 

CHORAO: Tribal Association of Tiswadi will organise Tiswadi taluka-level rangoli contest on Ganesh Chathurthi festival on August 31. The contest will be organised in each village on same day and same time and the venue will be given to the participants by the organizer. Those interested should contact Ranganath Kholkar, Deepak Karmalkar or Giri Gawas before August 24.

Uniforms distributed to Parra students

CALANGUTE: Parra Sarpanch Delilah Lobo distributed uniforms to the students of all the three government primary schools in Parra. Distribution of uniforms was part of the Independence Day celebrations of Parra Panchayat. Over 100 students of the three government primary schools benefited. Calangute MLA Michael Lobo, Panchayat Secretary Eknath Talkar, Parra panchas and villagers were present on the occasion. Speaking to Herald, Delilah said, “Students of government primary schools found it difficult to wear a decent uniform, so we thought of sponsoring the uniform cloth for the students. We gave the uniform material to all the students of the government primary schools in Parra to mark the Independence Day celebrations.”

Farmers urged to adopt scientific practices

OLD GOA: ICAR Research Complex for Goa, Ela, Old Goa, Director Dr Narendra Pratap Singh has appealed the farmers to adopt scientific practices to increase their crop yields. He was speaking during the inaugural function of Progressive Farmers Club of Neura-Mandur, motivated by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, ICAR Research Complex for Goa, organised at Neura Panchayat hall. Dr Singh also stressed on the need for soil testing for better use of balance fertilizer. B K Arsekar, Deputy Zonal Manager, said farmers should take benefit of crop loan of bank to buy critical inputs like seed and fertilizers, while Geeta Pansare, Assistant General Manager, NABARD, expressed happiness over the formation of farmers club. Shriram Dhaimodkar, Zonal Agricultural Officer, explained about the schemes. Vishram Gaonkar, Programme Coordinator, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Raju Naik, social worker, Taleigao, Anita Karmalkar, AIMS, Porvorim, Sunita Naik, Deputy Sarpanch, neural village and Jasinta D’Souza, Manager, Bank of India, Neura branch were present on the occasion.

Tribals urged to fight on

PONDA: United Tribal Association Alliance (UTAA) President Prakash Velip has appealed to the members to continue to struggle to get their major demands fulfilled. Speaking at a meeting at Farmagudi-Ponda, Velip appealed to the government to fulfil their long-pending demands like Tribal Forest Act, reservation of jobs and promotions and reservation in the assembly election. He asked the UTAA members to continue to struggle for their demands and said out of the 12 main demands, some are accepted by the Tribal Welfare Board and UTAA has helped many tribal citizens to get financial help from the Tribal Board. The meeting was attended by its leaders Govind Gavde and other members.
