PANJIM: Contemplating the introduction of special rewards to urban local bodies (ULBs) for their performance on garbage management, the State government has directed all local bodies to identify 150 sq mtrs of land to set up waste collection centres on a priority basis.
During a recent meeting on garbage management, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar stressed on the need for manned collection centres in all ULBs which will enable people to dump waste in these centres instead of dumping on the roads.
Parrikar suggested that a suitable space of around 150 sq metres may be identified by the urban bodies and that Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) would set up the collection centres as per requirements.
During the meeting the Chief Minister explored the possibility of introducing a scheme to reward the best two ULBs on a quarterly basis based on the independent assessment on various parameters related to cleanliness.
It was also unanimously agreed to have a strong enforcement wing to enforce penalties on violators so as to inculcate a sense of discipline among the citizens and deter them from throwing garbage in public places.
Accordingly it was decided to appoint an independent enforcement team in each ULB comprising one sanitary inspector and two persons from the police department.
