PANJIM: Over a year after the Registered Vehicle Scrapping Policy of Goa, 2023, was announced, the State is likely to get a vehicle scrapping facility at Marcaim which will be operational by next month.
Speaking to O Heraldo, a senior Transport Department official said, “The new facility, which is coming up at Marcaim, will become operational by next month and Mangalayan Limited has shown interest to invest and develop it.”
According to the official, no application was found earlier, but this year, the company has secured the licence and acquired land to commence the facility’s set up.
After becoming operational, the facility will have the mandate to scrap commercial and private vehicles aged over 15 years, the official said.
In a bid to curb pollution, Goa government had announced Registered Vehicle Scrapping Policy of Goa, 2023, in May last year. As per the policy, nearly 1.92 lakh vehicles, mostly over 15 years old, were set to be fit for scrapping. Moreover, over next five years, additional 3.5 lakh vehicles will cross the age limit.
To encourage scrapping of old vehicles, the government had offered to give 25 per cent rebate in Motor Vehicle Tax for new vehicle on producing a valid certificate of having scrapped the old one voluntarily with the Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility (RVSF).
