CALANGUTE: With owners not coming forward to claim their vehicles which have been impounded by the Calangute panchayat, the panchayat has now decided to auction the four-wheelers.

Nine vehicles had been seized after the Calangute panchayat started a drive in April against abandoned vehicles which were ‘creating nuisance for pedestrians, tourists and occupants of the vicinity, traffic congestions and obstructions to free flow of traffic’.

However, despite notices being issued to the owners, none of them have so far claimed their vehicles. A public notice was again issued this month. “If the owners still don’t claim their vehicles, they will now be auctioned,” sarpanch Joseph Sequeira said.

Earlier, in February, the panchayat had issued a public notice warning the owners to remove them before the end of the month failing which the panchayat would confiscate/attach the vehicles. But despite the notice, none of the vehicles were removed by the owners.

“These abandoned vehicles cause hindrance to traffic. One of these vehicles was on the road for the past three years, which was also removed,” he said.

The seized vehicles have been kept at the Bhodkovodd junction circle.
