PANJIM: The Congress on Thursday alleged that Goa Forward has been funded by the BJP to divide Congress votes.
“Goa Forward is a front put up and funded by BJP to damage Congress,” Congress chief spokesperson Sunil Kawthankar told media persons.
Kawthankar said Goa Forward never wanted an alliance but only wanted to create the perception that it wanted one and that Congress was not in favour of it. “It is known that while the party proposed an alliance with Congress, it fielded candidates in constituencies which are our stronghold. They even fielded Independent candidates against us,” he said. “Their funding and survival depends on quantum of damage they cause to Congress,” he added.
The Congress leader said that Goa Forward has been on a mission to split the Congress workers and attack the party. “Goa Forward’s foundation is built by Congress workers. The party has no leadership qualities,” he charged.
Kawthankar said that Goa Forward’s former mentors – MLA Rohan Khaunte (contesting as Independent with Congress support) and Naresh Sawal (MGP) – abandoned the party before the elections because both are fighting a serious battle with BJP and had realised that GF is a BJP front.
Goa Forward is contesting at Fatorda, Saligao, Siolim and Velim while supporting an Independent candidate at Navelim. Except for Siolim, Congress has fielded candidates at Navelim (Luizinho Faleiro), Saligao (Agnelo Fernandes), Velim (Felipe Neri Rodrigues) and Fatorda (Joseph Silva).
