Calangute Assn stun ONGC FC to keep their hopes alive

MAPSUSA: Calangute Association squeezed past ONGC Football Club with a hard fought 2-1 win in the 1st AWES Cup 2017 Group A match, organised by Goa Football Association (GFA) and Dempo Sports Club Juniors, played at Duler Stadium, here on Tuesday.
Calangute coach Alex Alvares made three changes to his side which lost against Dempo 1-0 in their first match as Omkar More, Runaal Shirodkar and Mayur Shelar made it into the starting XI.
While ONGC Coach Caetano Pinho fielded Nitesh Monde, F Lalmuanpuia and keeper Soumya Das in his playing XI.
Calangute's Myron Fernandes scored just before the half-time, but Prathamesh Kasare cancelled it in the second half. However, Mayur scored the winner for Calangute with just five minutes left for the final whistle.
The visitors started the match well and came into action within the first three minutes. Mukesh Minz sent a lofted cross to unmarked Himanshu Patil but the front man’s header was brilliantly blocked by Calangute keeper Jason D’Mello, but the ball travelled to Arjun Naik whose simple tap could have taken his side into the lead but he shot wide from close.
At the other end, Calangute’s Myron Fernandes shot wide from close with just the keeper to beat.
At the half hour mark, ONGC Coach Pinho replaced injured striker Ranjit Oraw with Prathamesh Kasare.
In the very next minute, Pratahamesh almost scored the opener for the visitors but his fine tap was nicely pushed away by the Calangute keeper Jason D’Mello.
Myron was in the action again when he tried his luck from the distance but his long ranger just went over the crossbar, however, very next minute, Myron opened the tally for his side when he made a simple tap in from the point blank range after Omkar who was the architect sent a perfect low cross from the right.
On changing over, Calangute had almost inflated their lead when Bersal Viegas’ scorching long ranger was excellently pushed over the crossbar by ONGC keeper Das.
At the other end, ONGC scored the equaliser. F Lalmuanpuia’s long distance free-kick was blocked by Calangute defender and the ball rolled to well-positioned substitute Prathamesh who drilled the ball past the keeper Jason making it 1-1 for the Mumbai based club.
A few minutes later, Calangute wasted another opportunity to score when Joston Pereira sent a cross in the box to Josley Dias but the striker failed to put power in his header as it was easily collected by keeper Das.
Finally, in the 85th minutes, Calangute scored the winner when Joston’s powerful shot rebounded off the goalpost to find overlapping Mayur, who guided the ball into the goal to send the large Calangute supporters into raptures, 2-1.
