CHATEAUROUX:Manu Bhaker became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic shooting medal as two more – rifle shooters Ramita Jindal and Arjun Babuta – qualified for the finals on a Super Sunday. India did not win any shooting medals in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.
On a bright and sunny day at the Chateauroux shooting centre, Bhaker finished with a bronze medal in the women’s 10m air pistol event where Korea finished with gold and silver. In a cliffhanger of a final, where the top four were often separated by decimals, Bhaker scored 221.7 for the third place.
Jin ye Oh demonstrated Korea’s domination in this event with an Olympic record score of 243.2. Yeiji Kim, who was trailing Bhaker at one stage in the elimination rounds, finished with the silver with a score of 241.3.
It became a three-way contest once the two Chinese, reigning world champion Jiang Ranxin and Li Xue were eliminated in fifth and fourth rounds, respectively. Only Vietnam’s Vinh Thu Trinh remained a threat for Bhaker, but only just.
“It feels surreal. I am really happy that I am the medium for this first medal and I really hope we would be winning many more medals at this Olympics as all of us have worked hard,” said an elated Bhaker, who proudly displayed the Indian tricolour amidst chants from Bharat Mata Ki Jai from the spectators’ stand.
