After Rohit Sharma, is Virat Kohli next to quit Tests? BCCI urges him to rethink decision

Possibly one of the biggest news coming from the cricket arena: the run machine Virat Kohli has decided to retire from Test cricket, as per the reports. He has informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about this decision. However, the BCCI has urged him to reconsider his decision. Not long ago, on Thursday, Rohit Sharma had announced his retirement from Test cricket via a social media post, and now, according to media reports, Kohli has made the decision to retire and has informed the board that he is bidding farewell to Test cricket. The BCCI has requested him to think again, as an important tour of England is approaching. However, he has not yet responded to the BCCI’s request.

Yes, it is true that Kohli's stats in the recently held Border-Gavaskar 2024-25 series were underwhelming, with an average of 23.75 and being dismissed outside the off-stump 8 times, which certainly became a topic of discussion. He managed only 190 runs, including one unbeaten century, which came in the first Test at Perth. In the last five years, Kohli has scored just three centuries in 37 Tests, with an average below 35. While he retired from T20 cricket, he has been in stellar form in IPL 2025, accumulating 505 runs in 11 matches.

Despite all these ongoing struggles in whites, Kohli's Test career remains impressive, with over 9,000 runs in 123 matches, including 30 centuries. His most prolific run-scoring has come against Australia, with 9 centuries, and he has also made 14 of his 30 centuries in India. As a Test captain, Kohli has been exceptional, leading India to 11 consecutive home series wins and scoring a record 7 double centuries. His leadership, particularly in Australia and South Africa, and his big runs in England during the 2018 series, have clearly cemented his legacy as one of the best Test batters and captains in Indian cricket history.
