RAIA: Betalbatim Sporting Club were crowned champions after beating Navelim Sporting Club 7-6 via tie-breaker in the final of 24th Benaulim Villagers Cup inter-village football tournament organised by Dando Boys Club Benaulim at St John de Baptist ground, Dando-Benaulim, recently.
The final played before a roaring crowd, delivered fireworks from the start. Navelim SC’s talisman Ronaldo Pereira calmly slotted home a 17th-minute penalty, but Betalbatim SC replied with relentless pressure.
In the 30th minute, a Dickson Rogtao free-kick caused heartbreak for Navelim SC as Aden Pereira mistakenly turned it into his own net.
The second half saw more drama as Ronaldo converted yet another penalty after Betalbatim SC goalkeeper Milton D’Souza fouled Prestly Gomes. But just when Navelim SC smelled victory, fate struck again - Aden Pereira scored his second own goal under pressure.
At the end of regulation time, both teams settled for a 2-2 draw.
In the ensuing penalty shoot-out, Betalbatim SC held their nerve to seize glory and Rs 50,000 in prize money.
The awards were handed over by chief guest Churchill Alemao, former chief minister of Goa, in the presence of guest of honour All India Football Federation Executive Committee Member Valanka Alemao, St John de Baptist Church Parish Priests Fr Malcolm and Fr Xavier, social worker Savio Alemao, special invitees Seraulim Sarpanch Sima Shanke, Goa Football Association Vice-President Anthony Pango, GFA Executive Member Anthony Leo Mam, former Zilla Panchayat member Nelly Rodrigues, Andrew Ferrao, Lizelle, Manoj Kesarkar, club members and other dignitaries.
