RAIA: CAC Sports and Social Club marched into the quarter-finals of 50th All Goa Chandor Seamen Rolling Trophy Inter-Village Football Tournament organised by Chandor Club, defeating Benfica Youth Club 4-1 in the inaugural match at the Chandor Church complex ground, on Friday.
Despite steady showers, spectators turned up to cheer the two neighbouring teams, making the opening day a vibrant affair.
Benfica Youth Club struck first goal through Johnson Horta in the 34th minute. However, CAC Sports and Social Club quickly bounced back with a flurry of goals - Arron Fernandes (39’), Rishley Soares (40’) and Jesus D’Sa (42’) turned the game on its head before halftime.
In the second half, Royann Gama (53’) sealed the win for CAC Sports and Social Club. The inaugural function was graced by Savio Medeira, former India international and national coach, as the chief guest. Parish Priest Fr Jean Da Cruz Fernandes and Sr Zinnia Coreia (teacher – Presentation Convent Higher Secondary School) were guests of honour. Special guests included Fr Afzal Fernandes, Piety Fernandes, Guirdolim Sarpanch Sonia Dias, Patwin Fizardo (GFA Executive Member), Maria Menezes, Nancy Antao, Hipolito Dias, Estefanio Dias and Derrick Braganza Pereira.
