RAIA: Cavelossim Veterans marched into the next round of 23rd All Goa Veterans Tournament organised by Flame of Unity Sports Club, after a dramatic 3-1 tie-breaker win over Verna Veterans following a goalless draw at Per Seraulim ground, on Friday.
From the outset, Cavelossim looked sharper, with midfield duo Raju Cardozo and Thomas Fernandes pulling the strings and Francis D’Costa providing thrust. Twice Raju went close, but his shots agonisingly missed the target as the first half ended goalless.
After resumption of play, Verna shifted gears with Remedious Barretto and Remy Colaco dominating the midfield, putting Cavelossim’s defence under severe pressure.
However, Cavelossim’s goalkeeper Anil Fernandes rose to the occasion with a series of brilliant saves to keep Verna at bay.
The match headed into penalties where Thomas, Charles and Francis coolly converted for Cavelossim, while Rosario Dias was Verna’s only scorer. The result sealed a hard-fought and thrilling victory for Cavelossim.
