India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has returned home from England after his mother, Seema Gambhir, suffered a heart attack and was admitted to the ICU at a hospital in New Delhi. The incident occurred on June 11, prompting Gambhir to fly back on June 12 to be by his family’s side.
According to doctors at Gangaram Hospital, while her condition remains under observation, there are encouraging signs of recovery. Seema Gambhir is now considered stable and out of immediate danger.
Gambhir had reached England on June 6, ahead of the Indian cricket team, to begin preparations for the upcoming five-match Test series against England—part of the 2025–27 World Test Championship cycle. He was also scheduled to oversee the India vs India A intra-squad match, which began on June 13 in Beckenham.
In Gambhir’s absence, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has stepped in as interim in-charge, supported by bowling coach Morne Morkel and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak. The Indian team, captained by Shubman Gill, continues training with the first Test set to begin on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds.
Gambhir is expected to rejoin the team before the series opener if his mother’s health continues to improve. June 17 is being considered as a tentative return date, though final plans will depend on her recovery progress.
The BCCI, along with the cricketing fraternity, has extended heartfelt support and wishes to Gambhir and his family during this difficult time.
