The Sports Ministry on Thursday confirmed India’s participation in the upcoming Asia Cup clash against Pakistan, scheduled for September 14 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. This comes under a newly announced policy on international sporting ties with Pakistan.
While reiterating that bilateral contests remain suspended, the ministry clarified that multilateral events will face no restrictions. This means the Suryakumar Yadav-led Indian side will feature in the Asia Cup as planned. Sources told PTI that the directive takes effect immediately.
“India’s approach to sports involving Pakistan mirrors its overall policy with that nation,” the ministry stated. “Bilateral fixtures will not be permitted, neither in India nor in Pakistan. However, participation in multilateral tournaments will continue.”
The decision ends weeks of speculation about India’s stance after heightened tensions following the April terror attack in Pahalgam. At one point, concerns were raised that India’s withdrawal might even jeopardise the tournament.
Meanwhile, questions remain about India’s participation in future multi-nation events hosted in Pakistan, including the 2025 Champions Trophy. A ministry source stressed that cases will be examined individually before a call is taken.
