RAIA: Margao Sports Club were lucky to put it across CAC Cansaulim 1-0 to enter the quarter-finals of Cavelossim Villagers UK Cup 2025 organised by Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim at Fr Druston and Wellington ground, Cavelossim, on Tuesday.
In an absorbing pre-quarterfinal match CAC Cansaulim had a great opportunity to move ahead when they were awarded an indirect free-kick in the penalty box but Slevin de Mello’s shot was well-blocked by Elroy Barreto for an abortive corner.
Again Elroy Barreto crossed the ball to unmarked Hanslam Furtado whose header missed the goal by inches.
However, it was Margao SC, who broke the deadlock when Clencio Pinto collected a through pass from Alfred Noronha and shot a powerful grounder into the right corner of the goal to score what turned out to be the only goal of the match.
CAC Cansaulim had a golden opportunity in the second half to restore parity when Valito handled the ball into the penalty area crossed by Aswin but goalkeeper Glen Fernandes easily blocked the resultant spot kick taken by Aron Fernandes to keep his slate clean.
CAC Cansaulim moved players in front in search of an equaliser but Margao SC defence stood firm to take their team to the quarter-finals.
