RAIA: Defying all odds and numerical disadvantage, Navelim Villagers Union scripted a thrilling 6-5 victory in penalties against United Club of Benaulim to move into the next round of 34th Super Soccer football tournament played at Dando ground, Benaulim, on Thursday.
A huge crowd witnessed an absorbing contest under the clear skies. UC Benaulim took charge through goals from Stallone Fernandes and Keegan, leading 2-0 by the 37th minute.
But Navelim Villagers Union refused to back down. Goalkeeper Jeet stood tall with crucial saves before Ronaldo Pereira pulled one back late in the second half.
A relentless Navelim Villagers Union surge paid off in the injury time when Noah Luis struck a dramatic equaliser to end the regulation time with 1-1 draw.
In the penalty shoot-out, Navelim Villagers Union held their nerves with Ronaldo, Noah, Sandroy and Meliston were on target, while UC Benaulim faltered with two misses.
