MARGAO: PCCE, Verna and Don Bosco College of Engineering won their respective matches to advance into the ACF Trophy in association with Sygenta India Pvt Ltd, co-sponsored by GFDC (Goa Football Developmental Council) and principle sponsors Indian Oil, at the artificial ground outside Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, here, on Saturday.
In the first match, PCCE edged past BITS Pilani 5-3 via the tie-breaker. As the match started both teams restricted play in the midfield with some swift passing. The first chance of the match came for BITS Pilani as striker Parth Mandan received the ball in a perfect position but mistimed his shot.
Post resumption, PCCE Verna were awarded a free-kick when Russel Vaz was brought down by the BITS Pilani goalkeeper Amol Joshi at the edge of the penalty area. The resultant free-kick by Steven Fernandes did no harm to the rival keeper.
The introduction of Ajay Manhas in the BITS attacking line created all sorts of problems for PCCE defense with his pace.
With just 10 minutes to go for the final whistle, Sammy D’Souza had the best chance to seal the match with only the keeper to beat but his chip went wide.
In the resultant tie-breaker, the Verna based lads proved to be better shooters as they outclassed their opponents 5-3. Ayesh Tari was awarded Man-of-the-Match for he’s consistent performance in the defensive line up.
In the second match, Don Bosco College of Engineering, Fatorda got the better of MES College, Zuarinagar 3-2 via the tie-breaker. There was no score at full time.
In the 14th minute, Rajat Naik of MES set up striker Suraj, who however, couldn’t finish with only the rival keeper at his mecy.
Subsequently, Don Bosco’s Joshua Barreto created a good opening but Frabio Monteiro lacked finishing.
Post resumption, the trend continued as Joyston Fernandes of Don Bosco was fed well but the latter could not finish. The Fatorda engineering lads kept their composure and outclassed MES in the tie-breaker. Frazier Rogtao of Don Bosco was adjudged Man-of-the-match.
On Sunday, Rosary College, Navelim will take on Chowgule College, Borda.
