RAIA: Sao Jose de Areal proved too strong for a spirited United Boys of Dando Colva outfit, registering a commanding 2-0 win to advance to the next round of the 34th Super Soccer Football Tournament, played at the Benaulimpanchayat ground.

The hosts, Colva, began with intensity, unsettling Areal with their fluid attacking play. Their golden opportunity came in the 25th minute when Shanon missed an open goal, failing to convert what could have been the opener. Despite Colva’s dominance, the first half ended goalless, with the home side appearing the more threatening.

The tide turned after the break as Areal’s experience came to the fore. Midfield maestros Priston Gomes and John Gomindes began to dictate the tempo, and it was Priston who broke the deadlock in the 37th minute with a cool finish to put Areal ahead.

Colva responded with urgency, mounting attacks through Conred and Clifford Fernandes, but were repeatedly thwarted by a well-organised Areal defence led by Bersal Viegas. Any hopes of a comeback were dashed in the 54th minute when Stalen netted Areal’s second with a brilliant finish, sealing the result.

Clifford Fernandes impressed for Colva with his tireless efforts, but it was Priston Gomes who was named man-of-the-match for his commanding performance. He received the award from Glyda Rodrigues, deputy sarpanch of VP Cana Benaulim.
