Sangolda Lightning lift Aldona Cup

MAPUSA, MARCH 13 A jubilant Sangolda Lightning narrowly overcame 10-man Goa Velha Sports Club 2-1 to lift the Aldona Cup organised by Quitula Sports Club at Quitula ground on Sunday. Sangolda led 2-0 at the interval.

A jubilant Sangolda Lightning narrowly overcame 10-man Goa Velha Sports Club 2-1 to lift the Aldona Cup organised by Quitula Sports Club at Quitula ground on Sunday. Sangolda led 2-0 at the interval.
Sangolda opened the scoring in the 14th minute, after the ball was laid on for Agnelo Quadros and he drilled it into the back of the net from a distance.
Six minutes later, Agnelo moved swiftly down the left side before rolling the ball across the face of the goal for Clifford Cardoza to double the lead.
Goa Velha put up a strong fight back in the second half. Twelve minutes after the restart, Peter Lopes received his second yellow of the match, reducing Goa Velha to ten.
With twelve minutes to play, Goa Velha played a short corner and the ball fell for Vishant Pednekar, who wasted no time in smashing home.
With time running out, Goa Velha piled on pressure with Vishant having another go from a distance, but this time the ball sailed over the cross bar and Sangolda hung on for victory.
Sangolda were richer by Rs 25,000 plus the winner’s trophy, while Goa Velha had to be content with Rs15, 000 and the runners-up trophy.
Tourism Minister, Nilkant Halarnakar was the chief guest while GFA vice-president, Lavinio Rebello was the guest of honour.
Following individual prizes were awarded: Best defender of the finals - Amar Haldankar (Sangolda). Best midfielder – Joston Lourenco (Goa Velha). First goal of the finals - Agnelo Quadros. Best disciplined team of the tournament - Siolim Sodiem Sports and Cultural Association.
