RAIA: Sporting Club Davorlim had to wait until the tie-breaker to outplay Fr Agnel Youth Club, Paroda, 6-5, in the final to emerge champions in Chandor Seamen Cup inter-village football tournament organised by Chandor Sports Club, at Chandor church ground, on Sunday.
Both teams were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation time. Fr Agnel YSC missed scoring chances through Melson Fernandes, Rohan Gaonkar and Savio Vales.
Sporting Club Davorlim took the lead on a spot-kick which was converted by William Niasso in the 20th minute of the match. Fr Agnel YSC fought brilliantly in the second and equalised in the 50th minute through Velroy Carvalho.
In the ensuing tie-breaker, William Niasso, Aeren Figueiredo, M Ajayr Raj, Prince Figueiredo and Venson Figueiredo scored for Sporting Club Davorlim, while Melson Fernandes, Reagan Costa, Pascoal Fernandes and Salvin Fernandes shot on target for Fr Agnel YSC.
Sporting Club Davorlim were richer by Rs 80,000 plus trophy, while Fr Agnel YSC had to be content with a purse of Rs 60,000 plus trophy.
Chief guest Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao gave away the prizes to the winners and runners-up in the presence of guests of honour South Goa MP Viriato Fernandes, special invitees Fr Eremito Rebello, chaplain, SFX Chapel Guirdolim; Acting Chandor-Cavorim Sarpanch Nancy Antao, Guirdolim Sarpanch Sonia Fernandes, Assistant Parish Priest, Chandor, Fr Afzal Fernandes; Bruno Lawrence, GFA Executive Members Constancio Paul, Patwin Fijardo; former Chandor Club player Samy Dias, other dignitaries and club officials.
