PONDA: SDH Masters edged past SDH Avengers 3-2 in the final to clinch the 3rd South District Hospital Ponda Trophy football tournament organised by SDH staff under leadership of Dr Jayashree Madaikar (MS) of District Hospital, Ponda, at the futsal arena, Telaulin, here, recently.
In all, seven teams took part in the one-day tournament, which was played on round robin league format.
In the final, Sidheswar helped SDH Avengers to take the lead in the very 6th minute of the game. SDH Masters came close to equalise in the 10th minute but goalkeeper Dippu came up with good save to denny the equaliser.
During the second half, Dr Isaas and Suhash combined well for SDH Masters to score the equaliser.
As the match ended in a draw, a tie-breaker system was adopted to decide the winner. For SDH Avengers only Sahkant could find the back of the net, while for SDH Masters M Abdul and Sarhash were on target.
Before the final, ladies exhibition match was played between Matron Flavia team and Ward Sister Surekha Dessai team. Both the teams gave a good performance and were level 1-1 draw during the end of regulation time. In the sudden death Matron Flavia team scored and won the match by 2-1 goals aggregate.
All India Football Federation Technical Instructor Savio Madeira was the chief guest, while former national football referee Anjulo Fernandes was the guest of honour. Later, both of them distributed prizes to the winners and runners-up and individual prizes in the presence of Dr Jayashree Madaikar.
Earlier, Dr Jayashree and Dr Sanjay Madaikar welcomed. Later, Isidorio proposed a vote of thanks.
