St Anne’s Institute, Perpetual Succour Convent HS & Loyola HS emerge champs

RAIA: St Anne’s Institute, Agonda; Perpetual Succour Convent High School, Navelim, and Loyola High School, Margao, won the titles in the U-14 girls and boys and U-12 boys categories respectively in the 5th All Goa inter-school Sir Jawaharlal Da Costa football tournament organised by United Sports Club of Seraulim at Seraulim panchayat ground, recently.

In the U-14 girls final, St Anne’s Institute had to sweat it out to defeat The King’s School, Sao Jose de Areal in the tie-breaker after both teams were locked at 1-1 at the end of regulation time. Joida Rocha gave The King’s School a 1-0 lead. However, Gwyneth Fernandes equalised for St Anne’s Institute. In the tie-breaker St Anne’s Institute proved to be the better shooters.

In the U-14 boys final, Perpetual Succour Convent High School were fortunate to down Loyola High School vie tie-breaker after both teams failed to score during the regulation time. In the U-12 boys final, Loyola High School pipped Marina English High School, Verna, 1-0. The all-important goal came through the boots of Abner Luis.

Parish Priest Fr Jose Gomes was the chief guest along with guest of honour Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas and special invitees Goa Football Association President Caitano Fernandes, Vice President Antonio Pango, Assistant Parish Priests Fr John Gonsalves, Seraulim Sarpanch Sima Shanke, GFA Executive Member Anthony Fernandes and Prakash and Rubal Da Costa, brothers of late Sir Jawaharlal Da Costa were also present. They later gave away the prizes to the winners and runners-up.

The Goa Football Development Council, Seraulim, award ceremony was also held at the same time.

On the occasion, Venzy handed over the ground from the possession of Sports Authority of Goa to the Seraulim Village Panchayat and promised to build a retaining wall at the ground entrance to facilitate free flow of water either before or after the monsoon this year.
