RAIA: St Anthony SC, Marna-Siolim, scored a convincing 3-1 victory over St Rock Youth Club, Majorda, in an electrifying encounter to move into the next round of Our Lady of Merces 8-a-side football tournament organised by Sirlim Sports Club, at the Chinchinm Church ground, on Tuesday.
St Anthony SC got off to a flying start with Kanaya Govekar putting them ahead in the 19th minute after a dazzling solo run that saw him dribble past two defenders before slotting home. Just six minutes later, Govekar struck again - this time with a powerful header from a well-timed cross, doubling St Anthony SC’s lead before the break.
St Rock YC clawed one back in the 32nd minute of the second half through Oscar Braganza, who capitalised on a defensive lapse to bring his side back into contention. However, St Anthony SC restored their two-goal cushion in the 58th minute when Pankesh Goltekar found the net with a neat finish.
Despite relentless pressure from St Rock YC in the dying minutes, St Anthony SC goalkeeper Francis Fernandes produced a string of brilliant saves to keep them at bay. Bevan D’Mello of St Rock YC earned praise for a stellar all-round performance, constantly troubling the St Anthony SC defence.
