MAPUSA: St Savio’s Sports Club, Calangute, humbled Saligao Sporting Club with a 5-0 win to clinch the glittering Calangute Panchayat Cup organised by St Savio Sports Club in memory of Rev Fr Conceicao D’Silva at the Poriat ground, Calangute, on Tuesday.
The final was largely attended and the winners went into the breather with one goal cushion.
St Savio’s SC surged ahead in the 14th minute when Saligao SC’s Peter Menezes brought down Tanay Kerkar inside the 18-yard box prompting Referee Tejas Nagvenkar to point to the dreaded spot. Dominic Fernandes stepped forward and scored, 1-0.
Just five minutes later, Saligao SC should have equalised but striker Sachidanand Satelkar was thwarted by St Savio’s SC goalkeeper Philip Coutinho in one to one situation.
Just three minutes into the second session and St Savio’s SC doubled their lead with Jovito Fernandes connecting Richard Cardozo cross, 2-0.
Fasel D’Souza made it 3-0 scoring from the penalty spot.
In the last five minutes of the match, Fasel netted his brace and Richard Cardozo scored the fifth goal.
Chief guest Calangute Constituency MLA Michael Lobo, special invitees Fr Pedro Costa, Ramchandra Mone (Pujari), Brandon De Souza (Police Inspector Traffic, Calangute), Calangute Sarpanch Joseph Sequeria, Deputy Sarpanch Anny Fernandes, Calangute panch members, Anthony D’Souza, former football international; John Fernandes, president of St Savio’s SC and members presented the trophy to the winners and cash prize of Rs 80,000 and runners-up trophy and cash prize of Rs50,000.
Lobo and Fr Pedro congratulated the teams and organizers while Joseph Sequeria proposed a vote of thanks.
