RAIA: In a tightly contested clash of the Anil Kamat memorial football tournament organised by Enfermos Sports Club, United Boys of Ambaulim carved out a hard-fought 1-0 win over Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club to move into the next round in the match played at the Chinchinim Church ground, on Monday.
The match burst into life early, with Joel Barreto giving United Boys of Ambaulim the lead in just the 2nd minute, capitalising on a quick counter-attack. San Jose de Areal responded with purpose and intensity, creating multiple opportunities to level the score. Ashnoy Gomes came close in the 7th minute, while Tyson Carvalho’s powerful strike in the 13th minute missed the target by a whisker.
The second half was marked by relentless pressure from Sao Jose de Areal SC. Fernandes, who had a standout performance, kept their hopes at bay with a series of remarkable saves, including a key stop from Ashnoy Gomes in the 43rd minute and another vital block from a dangerous corner taken by Viegas.
In the dying minutes, United Boys of Ambaulim had a chance to seal the match through Alex Fernandes, but Antao remained alert to keep the scoreline intact.
Despite their valiant efforts, Sao Jose de Areal could not find the equaliser, as the early goal proved decisive. UB Ambaulim held firm to register a narrow 1-0 victory.
Interestingly, Ashnoy Gomes of Sao Jose de Areal was adjudged the man-of-the-match for his persistent attacking play and overall impact.
