MAPUSA: Vasco Sports Club registered a hard-fought 1-0 win over Calangute Association SC in the Goa Professional League match played at Duler Stadium, here, on Friday.
Languishing at the bottom of the league table with just 4 points from 13 matches, Vasco SC played their hearts out as they took Calangute Association with 13 points and went into the breather with a goal cushion from their striker Ngulgoulal Singsit.
Early in the match, Port Towners should have taken the lead but a strong header from Reuben Letkhotinchon came off the horizontal bar from Konjengbam Singh’s corner.
Play was then mostly restricted to midfield, where in the 44th minute Vasco SC’s medio Blasco Fernandes sent an intelligent through pass to his speedy striker Ngulgoulal, who got the better of his marker and after dribbling past the onrushing goalkeeper Aditya Sharma placed the ball into the far corner of the goal, 1-0.
On crossing ends, in the 53rd minute, Calangute Association should have levelled terms when Richard Cardozo set up Jovito Fernandes whose hot blooded shot from inside the 18-yard box was paired for a corner by Vasco SC’s custodian Nabakumar Ghosh.
Once again play was restricted to midfield with both the goalkeepers being hardly tested.
Play came back to life only in the stoppage time when Vasco SC had two corners which was well defended by the goalkeeper and defenders.
Domnic Fernandes had a last chance for an equaliser but saw his stiff grounder being collected by Vasco SC’s custodian.
