Wankhede honors Rohit Sharma: parents unveil stand as ‘Hitman’ gets emotional

It was nothing but a emotional moment for Rohit Sharma as the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) honored India’s former Test captain and two-time ICC event winner by renaming Divecha Pavilion Level 3 at Wankhede Stadium as the Rohit Sharma Stand on May 16, 2025. The ceremony was graced by dignitaries including Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis and Sharad Pawar, along with Rohit’s family—his parents, wife Ritika Sajdeh, and brother. In a touching moment, Rohit called his parents on stage to officially unveil the stand, reflecting the deep pride and support behind his incredible journey from a young boy in Borivali to one of India’s greatest cricketers. The event celebrated not only Rohit’s achievements on the field but also the personal sacrifices and love that fueled his success. This tribute places Rohit among the greats like Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar, cementing his legacy in Mumbai’s cricketing history.

Alongside Rohit Sharma’s honor, the MCA also renamed other parts of Wankhede Stadium to celebrate Mumbai cricket’s rich legacy.

The Grand Stand Level 3 became the Sharad Pawar Stand, recognizing the former BCCI and MCA president’s contributions, while the Grand Stand Level 4 was named after Ajit Wadekar, the legendary captain who led India to historic Test wins in 1971. Also, a new office lounge was dedicated to former MCA president Amol Kale.
