Team India is scheduled to tour England next month for a five-match Test series. This will mark the beginning of the 2025–27 World Test Championship cycle, with the first match starting on 20 June. More significantly, it will also signal the beginning of a new era in Indian cricket, as veteran Rohit Sharma recently announced his retirement from the Test format. Rohit, who also served as the Test captain, had a difficult tour of Australia, where India suffered defeat. His retirement surprised many but paved the way for a fresh leadership choice.
Amid speculation and several contenders, it is now almost confirmed—according to media reports, that Shubman Gill will take over as the new Test captain. The BCCI is expected to make an official announcement soon, possibly during a press conference. Gill has reportedly met head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar to discuss India’s roadmap in red-ball cricket.
If confirmed, this will be Gill's first assignment as India’s Test captain. However, he brings prior leadership experience—having captained India in T20s during a tour of Zimbabwe, and currently leading Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025, where the team is performing impressively under his captaincy.
As per reports, the Indian squad for the England tour will be selected on 23 or 24 May, and that is when the BCCI may officially unveil Gill as the new captain.
