In a collective effort, activists are urging action from the government to declare Mhadei as a tiger reserve. The primary goal of designating Mhadei as a Tiger Reserve is to safeguard the environment and the crucial water-providing forests. The activists stated that the Tiger Reserve status for Mhadei is essential not only to shield Goa's lifeline, the Mhadei River, from the proposed Kalasa-Bhandura project in Karnataka but also to prevent potential harm from various other land and water projects. They firmly believe that conferring Tiger Reserve status on Mhadei can effectively serve this purpose. The activists propose designating human settlement, agriculture, and gardening areas as a buffer zone and preserving pristine regions as the core zone, with 400 sq. km in the core and the rest in the buffer.
