Do Not Rebel, Follow His Advice!

Molly Fernandes

The basic needs make our living. These needs come under physical needs. We are incomplete without our emotional, psychological, social, spiritual and other needs. In our journey of life the need of companionship is the priority. For, we are not meant to be forlorn. Certainly, it is sealed in the creation account where God creates a partner for Adam! This is experienced when we face adversities and are at cross roads. To make a call, to release tension or disturbance or just be around of someone who cares… and it does help to rejuvenate and gain strength and feel comforted. Just as we feel the need of a physical being, let’s not forget that God has given us a guide and a companion. And that is none other than the Guardian angel. It is imperative to realise his presence and get accustomed to his whispers, signs around you and happenings that reveal his presence. Besides these signs you can feel him touching you! Calling upon the guardian angel has to become part and parcel of our life. While at the book store last December there were some people looking out for a guardian angel to gift it on a first communion day! A right thing indeed to make known his presence at a young age!

We all have a guardian angel. In Genesis 18-19, angels not only acted as the executors of God's wrath against the cities of the plain, but they delivered Lot from danger; in Exodus 32:34, God said to Moses: "my angel shall go before thee." Psalm 91:11 says: "For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways". Angels are everywhere. They are mediators between God and us. Jesus very sternly says: "See that you despise not one of these little ones: for I say to you, that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is in heaven." (Mat. 18:10). No matter what we do in life, our angels will never leave us. Guardian angels are protectors and guides, ensuring that we stay safe, happy, healthy, and accomplish our life mission.

Pope Francis in one of his homily told the people to be like children who pay attention to their “travelling companion.” “No one journeys alone and no one should think that they are alone,” “According to Church tradition”, the Pope said, “we all have an angel with us, who guards us...” The Pope instructed “Do not rebel, follow his advice!”. The Pope urged that this “doctrine on the angels” not be considered “a little imaginative”. It is rather one of “truth”. It is “what Jesus, what God said: ‘I send an angel before you, to guard you, to accompany you on the way, so you will not make a mistake’”. And He concluded with a series of questions so that each one can examine their own conscience: “How is my relationship with my guardian angel? Do I listen to him? Do I bid him good day in the morning? Do I tell him: ‘guard me while I sleep?’ Do I speak with him? Do I ask his advice?

Making the sentiments of Pope Francis my own: let us evaluate “the relationship with this angel that the Lord has sent to guard me and to accompany me on the path, and who always beholds the face of the Father who is in heaven”!.

Indeed! an opportunity to make the best of our travelling companion, and be watchful, prepared for the call of God at anytime. No doubt, our travelling companion is the right guide, to light, to guard and rule our life, if given a chance!
