As mercury soars, demand for soft drinks, fruit juices, tender coconuts, watermelons increases

PONDA: With the shooting of summer temperature people are reeling under the scorching heat for the past two weeks. Many who visit Ponda town either for work or for shopping try to beat the heat by consuming soft drinks. With the demand for soft drinks increasing, the prices have also shot up. 

The day temperatures hover over a minimum of 30 degree Celsius and above. Various summer festivals such as  the annual Shigmo raise the demand for soft drinks. Since the past few days with shortage of lemons, their prices  have shot up and are being sold at Rs 7 to Rs 10 in the Ponda Market, depending on the size. The price of lemon juice has increased from Rs 20 to Rs 25 at soft drinks outlets.

The tender coconut prices too have shot up due to the increased demand. Earlier tender coconuts in Ponda were sold at Rs 40 are now sold at Rs 50 to Rs 60. The price of fruit juices and shakes have also increased increased from Rs 40 to Rs 50.

Watermelon prices have shot up the most from Rs 50 to Rs 100 depending upon size. Also the prices of mangoes especially the Mankurad variety which have just hit the market are just beyond the reach of common man. The prices range between Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 per dozen.
