CB inquiry into Colvale Jail points to corruption

PANJIM: In an observation that does not surprise many, Crime Branch’s (CB) inquiry into videos of Hazrat Ali Shaikh alias Anwar Shaikh alias Tiger moving around like a VIP inside the Colvale Jail, has pointed out to alleged corruption and indiscipline in the jail premises.

The inquiry was concluded just recently and the report has been submitted to the Home Department for action.

Sneaking of mobile phones and SIM cards, charging points to facilitate continuous use of mobiles, smuggling of drugs, promoting some goons as leaders within the jail, improper frisking of persons and belongings, etc are a common phenomenon in the vast complex.

While no individual has been named, the report points out to a nexus between the jail staff and the inmates. It has also suggested a strict vigil and thorough frisking of all who enter to prevent smuggling of banned things, among others.

Shaikh, known as ‘Tiger Anwar’, attained the so-called ‘fame’ for another self professed skill – shooting videos inside the jail and uploading them on social media last year. The videos are still up on YouTube and other channels, where he can be seen walking with a swagger around the jail with ‘followers’ treating him like a VIP.

The video was shots days before his release on bail. Soon thereafter he was arrested for assaulting and threatening to kill a young businessman in a fit of road rage.
