Canca farmers blame govt for blocking entry to their fields

MAPUSA: Farmers from Canca have blamed the government for blocking their entry to the fields located by the roadside from the circle to Bodgini.

They gathered near the Canca Circle on Saturday and accused the concerned department of widening the road from the circle till Bodgini thereby blocking the entry to their fields.

The farmers said they have been cultivating the fields for the last several years and claimed that they are not able to take the machinery to the fields as the concerned department has dug the road for construction of drains and has laid stones for road widening.

“We are about to harvest the crop. But we cannot take the harvesting machine to the fields. On one hand, the government is telling the people to cultivate fields and indulge in agriculture activities while on the other, it is creating such problems for us”, a farmer complained.

The farmers also claimed that the concerned department has not taken their permission and has gone ahead with the work without acquiring the land. The Electricity Department has installed poles in the fields without taking the NOC from them.

They complained that last year they suffered losses as their crops were damaged after the meat shops operating on the opposite side started releasing waste into the fields. Some farmers contracted skin infection.
