PANJIM: Claiming that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar is desperate to win the upcoming Panjim by-election, Congress on Saturday took a dig at the BJP candidate stating that fearing the possibility of a defeat, a salvage operation is in force using coalition partners, who are wooing voters.

Addressing media persons, Congress Panjim candidate Girish Chodankar said that the arrogance of the Chief Minister has led to the fact that ‘Manohar Parrikar is defeating Manohar Parrikar’ today.

He said that considering the support he (Chodankar) is getting in the constituency, Parrikar has called on his coalition partners to salvage his sinking ship.

“I am a simple common man. But even then Parrikar, who ruled the constituency for nearly 23 years, is today afraid of his defeat, and hence called on partners to salvage him. This is very unfortunate,” he said.

Chodankar, All India Congress Committee (AICC) Secretary, said that Parrikar needs to introspect. “Parrikar, the tall leader of the BJP, who boasted of winning the election unopposed, today has accepted defeat and called his coalition partners and people who were charged of corruption, to support him. It is high time Parrikar needs to introspect,” he said.

Stating that certain BJP workers in Panjim have extended support to Congress, Chodankar said the biggest challenge before Parrikar is to convince his party workers and then the voters. “The Panjim BJP workers are feeling ill-treated by the party. The Panjim voters too have decided to bring in change. The silent voters are slowly becoming vocal today,” he said.

Chodankar accused BJP of trying to create confusion amongst the voters by spreading rumours about a possible divide within Congress. “There is this news going round on social media that five Congress MLAs are on verge of quitting the party. BJP is making all false attempts to boost the morale of its workers,” he said.

Asked whether there is anxiety amongst Panjim voters about the possible beef ban issue, he said that the anxiety exist not only within minority communities but also other section. “Beef ban, is one of election issue today,” he said.
