PANJIM, APRIL 6
The process of beautification of St Inez creek was delayed further as sub committee on Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNURM) insisted that the slums along the creek should be removed first.
The project which has been kept on hold every now and then with the new queries raised by one or other member, this time came out with a new point of removal of shanties along its banks.
The meeting chaired by leader of opposition Manohar Parrikar pointed out that there were large number of hutments and the sewage was offloaded into creek which resulted into deterioration of the water quality.
Thus the meeting decided to look into the matter of illegal houses along the creek as well as to have a holistic approach towards its restoration.
The Water and Power Consultancy Service (WAPCO) which has pointed out the serious issues of sewerage, drainage and garbage disposal in their DPR, has termed the creek as ‘nuisance and environmental hazard’.
